2003 Season

July 4th Barbecue

The Fourth of July took a holiday from the rain that was prevalent throughout the Spring and early Summer to provide a great day for a barbecue. Chef Hervé Riou slaved over a hot grill to keep the hungry masses fed.

An excellent fireworks display appeared over the anchorage after dark to end a great July 4th.

Memorial Day Salute

The first ever attempted synchronized 21-gun salute was successfully carried out this past Memorial Day with the Glen Cove Yacht Club, and Sea Cliff and Hempstead Harbour Yacht Clubs all firing their cannons exactly on the minute for this salute to honor the memory of our military dead. The cannon fire began at exactly 12 noon on Memorial Day and continued for 20 minutes (one gun each minute). Glen Cove Yacht Club Historian Rich Reynolds organized the event which, in spite of the horrible weather that caused the cancellation of the City's parade, was completed as planned. Rich served as the Gun Captain and Fleet Captain Dave Nieri provide the timing marks from a handheld GPS receiver. This event should be a 'piece of cake' in future years when the weather is more seasonal.

The Winter of 2002-03 was a tough one, but the harbor never quite froze solid.
